Entirely too much food was consumed this past week in Nags Head (well, technically Kill Devil Hills). Here are some highlights:
- Flank Steak rules! I made flank steak for dinner on the 4th and served it with these caramelized onions and blue cheese. Totally awesome! Prurient and hubby made us flank steak Saturday night and served it with a kick-ass chimichurri sauce (recipe needed Prurient!). I've now bought a flank steak to make when friends come to visit next weekend.
- Harris Teeter rocks and blows the beach Food Lion out of the water!
- DQ ice cream is best served by Russian chicks. The only sucky thing about the beach DQ is the appalling lack of chocolate ice cream! Also, the waffle bowls are stale. But the peanut buster parfait is awesome and so is anything combining hot fudge and cookie dough.
- As evidenced above, I started out the week trying to be healthy (bought low fat yogurt, made salad for lunch) but it went downhill quickly.
- Merseydotes and Basil made us a fish tacos feast. I believe it's the recipe seen here. Super tasty!
- We actually did not eat out very much. One group trip to Goombay's, where the food is just OK, but the drinks are wacky and entertaining to the children (as is the guy at the bar who was comparing tattoos with our 3 yo), and one date night (10th anniversary) dinner (more below). But we did have lunch at Pigman's Bar-Be-Que. They rearranged the inside a bit and got a new menu sign, but the food was the same and did not disappoint. Plus I learned Son1 shares my love of hushpuppies!
- For our anniversary dinner, FS and I went to the Colington Cafe. They don't really advertise and yet it's always packed (plus you can only make reservations 4 days in advance). The food really is out of this world. I started with the scallop rumaki and then had the peacan-encrusted salmon topped with lump crab meat. For dessert -- toll house pie al la mode. The place really rocks and is definitely one of my favorite date places on the beach (the other is Ocean Boulevard).
- Mer and I also discovered the adult juice boxes at Harris Teeter (similar to these, but a different brand). They were drinkable, that's about all I can say for the wine itself, but the concept is brilliant! We took them to the beach -- only thing missing was a little straw.
- Other things I love: Ravenswood Old Vine Zinfandel, Bryer's Fried Ice Cream, Blue Sapphire Gin and Tonic, variety packs of Magic Hat beer, and Pepperidge Farms Cinnamon Grahams Goldfish.
Yes, that's the fish tacos recipe. We love it.
I would highly recommend Fat Crabs Rib Company in Corolla for super sticky-sweet, molasses-sauce-covered ribs, sweet cucumber salad and coleslaw and a cake-like cornbread. Also, the Seaside Farm Market in Corolla and Grandy's Greenhouse in Grandy are both sources of great local produce. We got corn, tomatoes and melon from Grandy's on the way home, and we just couldn't believe how sweet and ripe everything was.

Flank steak is a staple on my grill. I came this close to making a chimichurri last week. Instead I opted to marinate in teriyaki/honey/ginger. I use it exclusively for fajitas, too.
